Indonesia is set to modernize and upgrade its existing C-130H aircraft fleet, according to statements from Indonesian Air Force Chief of Staff (KSAU) Marshal TNI Fadjar Prasetyo.

The initiative aims to align the C-130H with the C-130J model, enhancing operational capabilities, particularly in the strategic Papua region, Indonesia Defense reported.

KSAU Marshal TNI Fadjar Prasetyo disclosed the plans during his working visit to Papua on March 4, emphasizing the goal of achieving commonality with the C-130J to bolster the operational efficiency of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) in Papua.

Indonesia received its fourth C-130J Super Hercules in January, with the final one expected to arrive in April. The earlier deliveries in March, June, and August 2023 strengthened the Air Squadron 31 Wing I at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base.

The C-130J-30, designed for various air transport missions, features glass cockpit technology and a Rolls Royce AR2100D3 Turboprop engine with a top speed of 410 MPH or 356 KTAS. The aircraft's selection reflects its effectiveness in Indonesia, a country with extensive territories and short runways.

During the visit to Papua, KSAU Marshal TNI Fadjar Prasetyo utilized the C-130J Super Hercules (A-1343) for its first mission in the region. The aircraft conducted a test landing at Wamena Airport. The mission marked the beginning of full operational deployment of the aircraft in the Papua region.

Key improvements in the C-130J Super Hercules include enhanced fuel protection and cargo handling systems, a more sophisticated flight station system, and a fully integrated digital avionics system. The aircraft is also equipped with a head-up display, advanced navigation with a dual inertial navigation system and GPS, enhancing its capabilities for Indonesia's defense requirements.
