The Spanish government has unveiled plans to bolster its air defence capabilities with the procurement of additional NASAMS systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) in a contract valued at approximately €410 million.
The announcement comes following the issuance of a notice of award by the Spanish Armaments Directorate, Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), for the NASAMS modernisation programme.
NASAMS is a medium-range air defence system developed jointly by KONGSBERG and Raytheon. Spain has been an early adopter of NASAMS technology, having utilized the system for over two decades. Presently, Spanish NASAMS units are actively engaged in the Baltics as part of NATO's Air Policing Mission.
The anticipated contract is expected to be finalized and signed in May 2024.
