The European Defence Agency (EDA) has initiated the third phase of its Modular Lightweight Minesweeping Next Generation (MLM-NG) project.
With a budget of approximately €9.2 million, this phase aims to advance the technology readiness level (TRL) of minesweeping systems and demonstrate their operational feasibility. Led by Norway and supported by Belgium, Germany, France, Finland, and Poland, the project builds upon previous phases conducted between 2011-2014 and 2018-2021.
The MLM-NG project focuses on developing modular lightweight minesweeping capabilities utilizing Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) with lightweight sweep sources. These systems can operate autonomously or in formations, enhancing flexibility and effectiveness in mine-clearing operations.
Key objectives include refining technologies developed under the earlier MLM projects, exploring tactics and operational procedures, and conducting sea trials scheduled for Summer 2026 in Norway. The trials will assess operational performance, technological viability, and safety measures, with all systems controlled remotely from a land-based command center to ensure personnel safety in potentially hazardous areas.
Consortium members from the participating Member States, including institutions like the Royal Military Academy in Belgium, MTG Marinetechnik GmbH in Germany, and Patria in Finland, will collaborate to achieve project milestones and contribute to advancing European maritime defense capabilities.
