Argentina's Minister of Defense, Luis Alfonso Petri, led the delivery ceremony for the first batch of modernized medium tanks (TAM) 2C A2 tanks on July 5.

The event took place at the Battalion of Arsenals 602 "Colonel Ángel Monasterio" in Boulogne Sur Mer, where the Minister also supervised the production and integration of tank components. Petri inspected the plant, where various ongoing developments were showcased, and the visit concluded with a dynamic demonstration on the tank test track. These upgraded tanks are destined for the 8th Cavalry Regiment located in Magdalena, Buenos Aires.

The TAM 2C project proposes to modernize 74 TAM tanks in five years, with a complementary stage of 30 additional units, estimating that more than 100 tanks will be manufactured in the foreseen time. The army wanted to receive between 10 and 12 tanks by the end of 2023.

IMPSA was hired to carry out the metal-mechanical part, while the optronic instruments were provided by Elbit Systems.

The TAM 2C A2 project is driven by the Army's Directorate General of Research and Development (DIGID) in collaboration with the Israeli defense company Elbit Systems. The project aims to modernize Argentina's medium tanks, addressing their obsolescence and technological lag. The A2 version incorporates new systems, including a digital control system for improved firing accuracy and an electric turret system for enhanced speed and combat effectiveness.

The TAM 2CA2’s overall dimensions and weight allow for easy transportation and deployment. The tank's turret is armed with a Rheinmetall Rh-105-30 105mm smoothbore gun manufactured in Argentina as the FM K.4 Modelo 1L. One of the notable features of the TAM 2CA2 is its advanced fire control system which enables the tank to engage targets accurately and efficiently, even on the move. The tank's onboard computer systems enhance its operational capabilities, providing the crew with vital information and improving overall situational awareness on the battlefield.

Around 70% of the components, spare parts and supplies for the maintenance of these units are of national origin.

Petri emphasized the critical need for these modernized tanks for Argentina's national security. "Today we are completing a years-long process and enabling the delivery of modernized tanks that are crucial for the Republic of Argentina, to ensure peace and save lives," Petri stated.

The Battalion of Arsenals 602 and 601 play crucial roles in the Army's maintenance and supply operations. Battalion 602 focuses on tracked combat vehicles like the TAM and M113, identifying and repairing complex issues to ensure operational capability. Meanwhile, Battalion 601 handles maintenance for wheeled vehicles, light weapons, and artillery equipment, contributing significantly to the force's logistical and operational support.
