China has announced the suspension of talks with the United States regarding a new round of consultations on arms control and non-proliferation, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The decision was disclosed on Wednesday, attributing responsibility to the U.S.
Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the political atmosphere necessary for constructive engagement has been compromised by actions from the U.S.
“For some time, the U.S. has ignored China's resolute opposition and repeated representations, continued to engage in arms sales to China's Taiwan region, and taken a series of negative measures that undermine China's core interests and hurt the mutual trust between the two sides,” Lin said.
Despite the suspension, Lin affirmed China’s willingness to maintain communication with the U.S. on international arms control issues, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation. He added that the U.S. must respect China's core interests and create favorable conditions for dialogue.
The last round of consultations between China and the U.S. took place in Washington, D.C., in November 2023.
