Lockheed Martin awarded Indra, Escribano Mechanical and Engineering, and ICM (Integral de Conexión y Montajes, S.L.) purchase orders for AN/SPY-7(V)2 components on the F-110 frigate.

SPY-7 radar

Lockheed Martin’s SPY-7(V)2 radar in Spain’s F-110 multi-mission frigate recently completed Critical Design Review.

SPY-7 radar has the ability to detect, track and engage sophisticated ballistic missile and air threats. It engages multiple targets simultaneously with interceptors.

It is a modular, scalable software defined digital solid-state radar.

The SPY-7 is also interoperable with other radars and platforms. It’s fully compatible with the Aegis Combat System and is being fielded with domestic and international customers, such as the Missile Defense Agency for the Long-Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR), U.S. Navy for the Spanish F-110 Frigate and the Canadian Surface Combatant.

Spanish Navy’s F110 Bonifaz-class frigates

F110 Bonifaz-class frigates are being constructed for Spain as a replacement for the Navy’s Santa Maria-class frigates. A €4.3 billion deal for these warships, set to replace the Navy’s Santa Maria-class frigates, was signed in April 2019. The vessels will feature anti-submarine capabilities and will undertake fleet protection, maritime security in joint and combined missions.

The construction of the first pilot blocks of the F-111, the first of its class, began in 2021.

The Bonifaz-class frigates, recognized for their advanced capabilities, will incorporate key features, including a sonar suite by Thales featuring the BlueMaster UMS 4110 and CAPTAS 4 Compact sonars, the TUUM-6 underwater communication system, and the BlueScan digital acoustic system. The SCOMBA combat system by Navantia, Lockheed Martin’s SPY-7 radar in the S-band variant, and Leonardo's 127mm 127/64 LW main gun are integral components. Additionally, the frigates will be equipped with Raytheon’s Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 missile, Rohde & Schwarz external communications systems, GMV’s SENDA navigation system, and propeller systems by Kongsberg Maritime.

In December 2023, the Spanish Navy placed an order valued €305 million for Kongsberg’s Naval Strike Missiles to be armed on the F-110 frigates.
