The Palestinian militant group Hamas has confirmed the death of its Chief Political Leader, Ismail Haniyeh, following an attack earlier tonight in Tehran, Iran.

Haniyeh had met with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian the day before. He was in Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of President Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

In a statement on July 31, Hamas mourned Haniyeh's death, attributing it to “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were assassinated in Tehran, though they did not provide details on the method of the attack, which is under investigation.

Previously, on April 10, three of Haniyeh’s sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, according to Hamas and Haniyeh’s family. Hazem, Amir, and Mohammad Haniyeh died when their car was bombed in Gaza’s Al-Shati camp. Some of Haniyeh’s grandchildren also perished in the attack.

Ismail Haniyeh served as the spokesperson for Hamas's global diplomacy during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Appointed as the group's leader in 2017, he moved between Turkey and Qatar’s capital, Doha, to avoid Israeli travel restrictions in Gaza and to facilitate his role as a negotiator in ceasefire talks and communications with Iran.

Israel Defense Forces Assassinate Hezbollah Commander in Lebanon

Israel has confirmed carrying out an airstrike in Beirut, targeting senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, in response to a rocket attack on July 27 that killed 12 children in a Golan Heights soccer field. The strike resulted in the deaths of Shukr, three civilians - including a woman and two children - and injured over 70 people.

Hezbollah acknowledged the airstrike, stating that "a number of citizens" were killed, others were injured, and "significant destruction" occurred. The group confirmed that Shukr was present in the targeted building but did not confirm his death. Hezbollah reported that they are still working to clear the rubble and have not yet determined the fate of Shukr.
