BAE Systems has started building a new plant in UK’s Sheffield for the development and production of M777 howitzers.

This marks a £25 million investment aimed at revitalizing the UK’s artillery manufacturing sector.

The 94,000-square-foot facility will serve as a specialized production site for the lightweight M777 towed howitzers. It is expected to create 50 high-skilled jobs and contribute to the UK government’s goal of strengthening domestic artillery capabilities. Construction is underway, with the site set to become operational in 2025.

The M777 howitzers, which have seen increased demand due to their use by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, are expected to be produced at this new site. Countries such as Canada, Australia, and other European and Asian nations have also expressed interest in acquiring these artillery systems.

BAE Systems has made several recent investments in the UK, including a £300 million modernization of its shipbuilding facilities in Glasgow, £220 million for a new electronic systems factory in Rochester, and over £200 million to expand ammunition production. These projects aim to meet growing domestic and international defense requirements.

The M777 howitzers, known for their lightweight design and operational efficiency, are primarily used by the U.S., which currently operates more than 1,200 units.
