Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first H145M helicopter to Germany less than a year after signing a contract for up to 82 units.
Named “Leichter Kampfhubschrauber” (light combat helicopter) or LKH, the new fleet will support the Bundeswehr in training, reconnaissance, Special Forces missions, and light attack operations.
The initial helicopter is designated for training purposes and will be stationed at the German Army's Bückeburg base. Pilot training began in August 2024. The first light attack variant of the H145M is scheduled for delivery in 2025.
The December 2023 contract between the Bundeswehr and Airbus Helicopters marked the largest order ever placed for the H145M, including 62 firm orders and 20 options. The deal also includes a seven-year support package. The German Army will receive 57 helicopters, and the Luftwaffe’s Special Forces will acquire five.
The H145M is a military helicopter capable of reconfiguration for various missions. Its features include the HForce weapon management system, enabling transitions between light attack and special operations roles. Additional mission capabilities include hoisting, external cargo handling, and fast-roping equipment for troops.
The H145M is powered by twin Turbomeca Arriel 2E engines and features the Helionix digital avionics suite, enhancing operational efficiency with a 4-axis autopilot and advanced flight data management. Its low acoustic footprint makes it one of the quietest helicopters in its class.
The Bundeswehr already operates 24 H145 helicopters for special forces and search-and-rescue missions.
