Chinese Admiral Suspended Amid Allegations of Discipline Violations

Admiral Miao Hua, a member of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC) and director of its Political Work Department, has been suspended pending investigation for alleged "serious violations of discipline," China’s Defense Ministry announced on Thursday.

Speaking at a press briefing, Defense Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian confirmed Miao’s removal but provided no details regarding the specific allegations. The phrase "serious violations of discipline" is often used in China as a euphemism for corruption.

Miao, considered a close ally of President Xi Jinping, was one of six members of the powerful CMC, which oversees the Chinese military. His suspension comes as President Xi intensifies a campaign against corruption within the armed forces, emphasizing the need to eradicate graft to bolster military readiness.

Beijing’s recent anti-corruption drive has already led to the removal of several high-ranking military officials. Earlier this year, former Defense Minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe were expelled from the Communist Party for bribery and other offenses.

The campaign has also focused on the Rocket Force, which manages China’s strategic missile arsenal. Multiple senior officers, including Sun Jinming, have faced investigations for corruption.

At the same briefing, Wu Qian dismissed reports that Defense Minister Dong Jun is under investigation, labeling them as "fabrications." Dong, a former navy commander, succeeded Li Shangfu in December 2023.
