Fincantieri has officially delivered the amphibious vessel Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Al Fulk to the Ministry of Defence of Qatar at the Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia, Italy.
The Al Fulk is approximately 143 meters long and 21.5 meters wide, with the capacity to accommodate up to 550 people. It features a large flight deck capable of hosting NH90 helicopters, a spacious garage with two vehicle ramps, and a floodable internal dock for deploying landing craft. Built entirely in Italian shipyards, the vessel complies with RINAMIL naval classification rules, ensuring efficient land, air, and sea operations.
Launched in January 2023, the Al Fulk shares the same Kronos Grand multifunction radar as the Qatari corvettes but has not yet been fitted with a second radar shown in earlier models. The 2018 model depicted a wide, rotating antenna, reportedly representing Leonardo's fully digital Kronos Power Shield radar, designed for tactical ballistic missile surveillance and defense. The 2022 model featured a narrower rotating antenna, similar to the Kronos Power Shield installed on the Italian Navy’s new landing helicopter dock Trieste.
According to Leonardo, the Kronos Power Shield is specifically designed for naval tactical ballistic missile surveillance and defense, with a resolution capable of distinguishing missile boosters from re-entry vehicles.
