Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has formally handed over the first batch of the Peklo long-range missile-drones to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The 700 km range missile-drone has twice the range of the UK-made "Strom Shadow" missile which the West has denied Kyiv from firing at targets inside Russia.
“The ‘Peklo’ (Hell) drone-missile — our Ukrainian weapon with proven combat effectiveness. Today, the first batch was delivered to our Defense Forces. The mission now is to scale up production and deployment,” Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine's state defense manufacturer Ukroboronprom has developed the Peklo missile-drone, which boasts a range of over 700 kilometers and speeds up to 700 km/h. While specific details remain classified, the weapon is said to rival certain Russian cruise missiles while being more cost-effective. At least 60 units have been produced, with mass production underway.
Efforts to improve the missile-drone's resistance to electronic warfare, accuracy, and performance are ongoing. Additionally, new warhead types are being developed to expand its target range.
The Peklo (Hell in Ukrainian) will allow Kyiv to strike Krasnodar, Vladimir or Moscow with this munition without asking permission from its Western backers. However, satellite intelligence and target designation will still most likely be provided by allies.
The Peklo, which resembles a cruise missile, is over a meter long, with small wings and two tail fins. Despite limited public specifications, Ukroboronprom confirmed its impressive range and speed.
The new Ukrainian drone missile is said to be a budget alternative to the Western Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG. It is stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have already used "Peklo" in combat 5 times.
Ukraine, aiming to enhance its long-range strike capabilities against Russian missile and drone attacks, has developed unmanned aerial systems (UAS) like explosive-laden propeller drones, capable of reaching up to 1,000 km into Russian territory.
