Raytheon Technologies has been awarded a $946 million contract by the U.S. Pentagon to supply Romania with additional Patriot air and missile defense systems.
The contract includes the delivery of radars, control stations, and interceptor missiles. This marks Romania’s third order of Patriot systems following previous acquisitions in 2017 and 2020.
The Patriot system is capable of defending against long-range cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and other aerial threats. The Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) variant has a range of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles). The system has been operational in Ukraine, intercepting Russian threats, including hypersonic missiles.
Romania has already received four Patriot systems, with one system donated to Ukraine in October 2024. The remaining systems under the current U.S. agreement are scheduled for delivery starting in 2027. Raytheon continues to work with local Romanian defense companies to ensure the continuity of the supply chain for these systems.
In addition to this contract, NATO allies such as Norway ($127 million) and Sweden ($27 million) have pledged support to Romania to replace equipment sent to Ukraine.
