High-Ranking Russian Delegation in Algeria: Su-57 Deal Soon?

Algeria is reportedly set to sign a deal with Russia for the procurement of Su-57 fighter jets, a move that would place the North African nation among the select few to operate fifth-generation stealth aircraft.

According to information from the Russian Arms Telegram channel, a high-ranking Russian government delegation is currently heading to Algeria, likely to conclude agreements on military-technical cooperation, secure contracts for advanced weapons, and finalize the delivery of Su-57 fighters.

The deal, if confirmed, would likely make Algeria the third operator of the Su-57 after Russia and an unnamed customer, speculated to be China. At the Aishow China 2024, Russia revealed it had found an international buyer for the Su-57 but withheld details on the buyer's identity.

Algeria has long been one of Russia’s most significant military partners, second only to India in terms of Russian arms imports. The Algerian Air Force already operates a variety of Russian-made aircraft, including Su-30MKAs, MiG-29s, and Su-24s.

Algeria’s interest in the Su-57 is not new. Discussions about the acquisition of these jets have surfaced since 2019, when media reports indicated the country was looking to procure at least 14 units. In 2020, reports suggested that Algeria allocated funding for modern weapons under its 2021–2027 defense modernization plan, with fifth-generation aircraft like the Su-57 listed among the top priorities.

This potential purchase is seen as a strategic move by Algeria to counterbalance the growing military strength of its regional rival, Morocco, which has upgraded its air force with a fleet of F-16C/D Block 72 fighters from the U.S.

While the Su-57 remains a focal point, some reports suggest that Algeria has also shown interest in the Su-35 fighter, which could be a more affordable alternative to the Su-57. The Su-35 boasts advanced radar and engine capabilities that surpass Algeria’s current fleet of Su-30MKAs. However, both aircraft share similar mission profiles, meaning the Su-35 would not drastically alter Algeria’s operational strategy.

Algeria is also reportedly exploring other Russian aircraft options, such as the YAK-130M. During the Army-2024 Forum, an Algerian delegation was seen inspecting the YAK-130M, further indicating the country’s intent to diversify its fleet. Although sources from the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) have not confirmed or denied Algeria’s interest, the YAK-130M has increasingly appeared on the radar of Algerian defense planners.
