South Korea is reportedly finalizing a $300 million agreement to sell 20 K9 self-propelled howitzers to Vietnam.
South Korean media, citing industry and government sources, reported the development on Monday.
If finalized, the deal would represent the first arms sale between South Korea and Vietnam. Under the agreement, Vietnam will become the 10th country to acquire the K9 howitzer, which has already been exported to Australia, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, India, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Turkey.
In November, Vietnamese troops participated in a K9 training program organized by the South Korean Army, gaining hands-on experience with the artillery system. Additionally, during a 2023 visit to South Korea, Vietnamese Defense Minister Gen. Phan Van Giang toured a military unit operating the K9 and received a detailed briefing from its manufacturer, Hanwha Aerospace.
South Korea has previously supported Vietnam's military development by donating two decommissioned corvettes.
