Netherlands Navy Receives Two Renovated Landing Craft

The Royal Netherlands Navy has taken delivery of the first two of four renovated Landing Craft Utilities (LCUs) following modernization efforts.

These upgrades aim to extend the vessels' operational lifespan until at least 2032. The remaining two LCUs are scheduled for delivery later this year and in 2026.

The modernization project was undertaken by De Haas Shipyards in Rotterdam. Updates include the improvement of sensors, weapon systems, and command systems, alongside the installation of ballistic protective equipment.

The upgraded LCUs feature modernized sleeping accommodations, sanitary facilities, and maintenance areas, ensuring better conditions for personnel. The vessels’ generators have been replaced, and the wheelhouse has undergone modifications, incorporating a new layout and updated equipment. Additionally, the exhaust systems have been relocated to the aft section to improve functionality.

These enhancements aim to increase the vessels' operational capacity, flexibility, and survivability during amphibious and multifunctional missions.

LCUs are critical for transporting heavy equipment, including trucks and recovery vehicles, from amphibious transport ships to shorelines, especially in environments lacking port infrastructure. These vessels also enable the rapid deployment of marines and supplies during crises.
