Hungary is finalizing preparations for its first battalion equipped with Lynx infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), marking the unit’s initial operational readiness.
The announcement was made by a senior Hungarian Army official at the International Armored Vehicle Conference in Farnborough.
The 1st Grenadier Battalion has received 45 KF41 Lynx IFVs to date, with 25 vehicles sourced from Germany and 20 assembled in Hungary at the Rheinmetall Hungary Zrt. plant in Zalaegerszeg. The facility delivered its first locally assembled Lynx in late July 2024. This marks a transition for the battalion, which previously operated Russian BTR-80A armored personnel carriers, now being phased out.
During testing, Hungarian crews encountered operational challenges related to integrating the new vehicles’ systems and controls. Rheinmetall addressed reported issues, implementing upgrades such as emergency opening systems for the rear roof hatch and ramp and improving the heating system. The Lynx passed its testing phase and is deemed suitable for Hungarian military needs.
The newly formed 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade, which includes three grenadier battalions, is currently undergoing personnel and equipment assignments. Following the completion of the first battalion, subsequent units will receive additional KF41 Lynx vehicles.
Hungary became the first NATO country to order Rheinmetall’s KF41 Lynx under a 2020 agreement for 218 units worth over €2 billion. The procurement plan includes two production phases: the initial phase involves 46 Lynx and nine Buffalo armored personnel carriers assembled in Germany, while the remaining 172 vehicles will be produced in Hungary.
Hungary is also acquiring 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled guns for deployment with the 101st Artillery Division of the 25th Infantry Brigade and 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks.
