The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) has placed an order for 17 CH-47JA Block II Chinook Extended Range helicopters to upgrade its heavy-lift fleet, replacing some of its existing CH-47JA aircraft.
The helicopters will be co-produced by Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI).
Boeing and KHI have supplied more than 100 Chinooks to the JSDF since the 1980s, maintaining one of Japan’s longest-running military aircraft production programs. The Block II Chinook features a digital cockpit, reinforced airframe, and larger fuel tanks, enhancing performance and extending operational range. The updated avionics and structural improvements will also support future technology upgrades.
According to Boeing, the Block II configuration will improve stability, safety, and efficiency, enhancing Japan’s helicopter transport capabilities. The aircraft’s design aligns with the global fleet of modernized Chinooks, providing interoperability benefits.
With this acquisition, Japan becomes the fourth country to transition to the Block II Chinook, joining the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany.
