The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed interest in Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet and is considering a joint air platform project with Turkish defense firms, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) CEO Mehmet Demiroglu said at the IDEX 2025 defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi.
Demiroglu confirmed that discussions on the KAAN fighter are ongoing, with the UAE evaluating potential collaboration. Saudi Arabia is already involved in the project, and the UAE’s participation could further expand Turkey’s defense partnerships in the region. “During high-level discussions, UAE officials expressed interest in KAAN and indicated their willingness to engage with the project,” he said.
The second KAAN prototype is expected by late 2025, with the third set for early 2026. Initial serial production deliveries are scheduled for 2028.
In addition to KAAN, the UAE and Turkey discussed joint work on the Hurkus trainer aircraft. “We have agreed on how we can jointly develop the Hurkus and enhance the aircraft produced by the UAE. The agreement will be formalized soon,” he said.
The UAE has also renewed its interest in the Turkish ATAK attack helicopter. Previous tests of the ATAK 1 model received favorable assessments, though talks were put on hold. Now, discussions on potential acquisitions have resumed.
“They previously tested ATAK 1 and were impressed with its capabilities. A high-level delegation even visited Türkiye to experience it firsthand,” Demiroglu stated.
Beyond existing platforms, the UAE has shown interest in Turkey’s ANKA-3 unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) and is in talks with Turkish defense firms regarding the development of a new aviation system.
Turkey’s growing defense ties with the UAE reflect broader regional trends, with Gulf states seeking advanced military technologies and deeper strategic cooperation with international partners.
