Singapore has approved the purchase of 8 more F-35A fighter jets, expanding its F-35 fleet as part of efforts to modernize the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).
The Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) confirmed the acquisition of eight F-35A units in addition to 12 previously ordered F-35B variants. Singapore will also establish a joint F-35 and F-16 training detachment at the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in the U.S., the ministry said in a statement.
A year ago, Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen cited competitive pricing as a key factor in accelerating the F-35A purchase. “We may have to de-prioritize other projects for this opportunity buy,” he said, adding that the decision would place the RSAF in the “premier league” of air forces.
The F-35A model supports conventional takeoff and landing, carries larger payloads, and offers greater operational flexibility. Both the “A” and “B” variants are suited for Singapore’s limited land area.
Singapore first ordered four F-35Bs in 2020 in a deal valued at $2.75 billion, followed by eight more in 2023. These aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2026 and 2028. If the acquisition plan remains on schedule, the additional F-35As will arrive by 2030—the same year Singapore plans to retire its aging F-16 fleet.
By the end of the decade, the RSAF is expected to operate a mixed fleet of F-15SG, F-35A, and F-35B fighter jets.
