Indra and Rheinmetall Electronics have signed an agreement to propose an upgrade for the Spanish Leopard 2 E main battle tank’s combat system, incorporating technologies compatible with future C4I solutions.
The companies, which originally co-produced the tank’s fire control and C4I systems, will continue their collaboration under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Rheinmetall, as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the Leopard 2 fire control system, offers modular, digitalized defense electronics that allow flexible fleet management with tailored configurations.
The proposed upgrades will align the Leopard 2 E with other variants, enabling interoperability among operators and the exchange of technological advancements over the tank’s lifecycle. Indra brings expertise in combat system development, electro-optics, and battle management solutions, while Rheinmetall specializes in automated operations, network integration, and unmanned capabilities.
As Spain and other NATO and E.U. nations increase defense budgets, the modernization of combat vehicle fleets remains a priority for operational readiness.
