Lockheed Martin has deployed its AN/TPQ-53 multi-mission radar (MMR) on the U.S.-Mexico border, integrating it with the Joint Task Force – Southern Border (JTF-SB) command and control systems to support U.S. Northern Command's (USNORTHCOM) operations.
The radar's open architecture allows seamless integration with various sensors and systems, creating a unified operational picture. This flexibility enables rapid software updates and capability enhancements to counter evolving threats.
Rick Cordaro, vice president and general manager of Radar Sensors and Systems at Lockheed Martin, said the deployment highlights collaboration between industry, government agencies, and end-users. He emphasized the AN/TPQ-53's reliability and adaptability, calling it a vital tool for USNORTHCOM’s efforts to work with Customs and Border Protection in securing the southern border.
The AN/TPQ-53 MMR provides 360-degree scanning and can be deployed in under five minutes, detecting airborne and ground-based threats, including unmanned aerial systems. This deployment follows recent demonstrations, such as Northern Strike and Desert Guardian 1.0, showcasing the radar’s ability to adopt software updates and meet national security priorities.
