The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has announced the purchase of 785 new operational wheeled vehicles from Italy’s Iveco Defence Vehicles SpA, aimed at enhancing its logistical and operational mobility.

State Secretary Gijs Tuinman confirmed the procurement on May 13.

The acquisition includes 588 swap-load vehicles, 100 tractor units for trailer combinations, and 97 wheel recovery (WTB) vehicles. Deliveries will begin in 2027 and continue through to 2029.

According to the Ministry, the decision was made to ensure the Dutch armed forces have sufficient transport capacity to support both domestic operations and international missions. The new fleet will also strengthen the military’s ability to carry heavy combat equipment, such as the Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks.

The contract with Iveco also includes spare parts, specialised tools, testing equipment, and technical documentation. Essential components like gun carriages and run-flat tyres—which allow movement even after a puncture—are also part of the package.

The WTB vehicles will be capable of operating under challenging terrain and weather conditions, including movement on unpaved roads and in amphibious environments where bridging support may not be available.

Some of the vehicles will feature ballistic protection and self-defence armament, making them suitable for high-intensity conflict zones. They will be deployed across different branches of the Dutch armed forces.

The Ministry confirmed that while the current fleet has reached the end of its technical and economic lifespan, many of the older vehicles will be retained as strategic reserves.
