German Drone-maker Helsing Acquires Aircraft Manufacturer, Grob

European defense technology firm Helsing has signed a binding agreement to acquire German aircraft manufacturer Grob Aircraft SE, marking a strategic move to enhance next-generation aerial warfare capabilities.

The acquisition, subject to regulatory approvals, combines Helsing’s artificial intelligence (AI) and software solutions with Grob’s established legacy in composite aircraft manufacturing.

The deal deepens an existing partnership between the two companies, which previously collaborated on Helsing’s Cirra platform—an AI algorithm integrated into aircraft for real-time electronic warfare threat assessment.

Grob Aircraft, based in Tussenhausen, Bavaria, employs around 275 personnel and is known for its lightweight, durable aircraft built with composite materials. The company operates from its own airfield and maintains a strong pipeline of aircraft deliveries and international flight training programs. It has a longstanding reputation in both military and civil aviation sectors.

By acquiring Grob, Helsing strengthens its operations in the air domain, complementing its broader focus on land, sea, air, and space defense technologies. The partnership will also contribute to advancing Bavaria as a regional hub for aerospace and AI innovation. Helsing said the investment will lead to new job creation in the state, aligning with regional ambitions to position Bavaria as a center of defense technology.

Industry analysts note that this acquisition occurs at a time of rapid development in Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA)—unmanned platforms designed to operate alongside manned fighter jets. While Grob has traditionally focused on piston-engine aircraft, its manufacturing capabilities in composite materials are viewed as an asset in adapting to next-gen drone programs.

The seller, H3 Aerospace GmbH & Co KG, and all involved parties have agreed to keep the financial terms confidential.
