Indonesia has signed an implementation contract to acquire 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets from Turkey.
The deal was formalized during the 2025 International Defense Exhibition (IDEF) in Istanbul on Saturday, July 26, and witnessed by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. It follows a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement signed on June 11, 2025.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) signed the contract with Indonesian firms PT Dirgantara Indonesia and PT Republik Aero Dirgantara. Deliveries of the aircraft, all powered by Turkish-made engines, are scheduled to be completed within 120 months.
The agreement includes co-production, engineering collaboration, and technology transfer. Indonesia plans to establish a local industrial base under the deal, aimed at boosting its defense sector's capacity and self-reliance.
TAI General Manager Mehmet Demiroğlu noted that KAAN places Turkey among a select group of nations capable of developing next-generation combat aircraft. Three prototypes have been developed since KAAN’s maiden flight in early 2024, with two more tests scheduled for April 2026 ahead of mass production.
