The U.S. Army has demonstrated the ability of AH-64E Apache helicopters to detect, track, and neutralize unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), highlighting their value as a mobile counter-drone platform.

The event, conducted by Program Manager Apache, Program Manager Tactical Aviation and Ground Munitions, and the Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments and Ammunition, in partnership with the South Carolina Army National Guard, showcased Apache’s firepower and mobility in defeating aerial threats.

Apache crews executed engagements using the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), HELLFIRE variants, the Hydra-70 Guided Rocket with an Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) guidance section, and 30mm proximity-fused ammunition. All missile systems destroyed their designated targets, the Hydra-70 with APKWS achieved three of four kills, and 30mm rounds neutralized aerial threats.

Drones are cheap, adaptable, and dangerous, while most counter-systems are ground-based and limited. Apache helicopters give commanders a fast, mobile way to find hidden threats and strike across the battlespace. Equipped with modern sensors and connected through networks like Link 16, Apache also enhances early warning, situational awareness, and battlefield data sharing.
