Indonesia will acquire China-made J-10 fighter jets, the country’s Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin told local media.
“They will be flying over Jakarta soon,” Sjamsoeddin was quoted as saying by Indonesian news agency Antara on Wednesday. He did not disclose details on the number of aircraft, delivery schedule, or contract value.
The announcement marks Indonesia’s first reported purchase of Chinese-built fighter jets, expanding its mix of Western and non-Western defense suppliers.
The surprise announcement could cut into additional procurement of Rafale jets by Indonesia, something France has been apprehending.
In June this year, French intelligence sources told the Associated Press that they suspected Chinese diplomats of attempting to tarnish the reputation and sales of France’s Rafale jets. The AP report had particularly mentioned Indonesia where such efforts had been made.
In June, Reuters reported that Indonesia was weighing the acquisition of China’s J-10 fighters while also considering the U.S.-made F-15EX. At the time, Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto said the review focused on system compatibility, after-sales support, and pricing.
Jakarta has been modernizing its air force fleet over the past few years. In 2022, the country signed an $8.1 billion deal for 42 French Rafale fighters, with the first six aircraft scheduled for delivery next year. Buying equipment from multiple sources boosts national security by ensuring supply diversity.
The Chinese government has not yet confirmed Indonesia’s reported J-10 procurement. In July, China’s Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Jiang Bin said Beijing takes a “prudent and responsible attitude” toward arms exports.
“We are willing to share the achievements of China’s equipment development with friendly countries and contribute constructively to regional and global peace and stability,” Jiang said.
