Russia has reportedly delivered Buk-M2 and Pantsir air defense systems to Venezuela using Il-76 military transport aircraft.

This is according to Military Watch Magazine citing a statement by Alexei Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defence Committee.

“Russia is actually one of Venezuela’s key military-technical partners; we supply the country with virtually the entire range of weapons, from small arms to aircraft,” Zhuravlev said. “Russian Su-30MK2 fighters are the backbone of the Venezuelan Air Force, making it one of the most powerful air powers in the region. The delivery of several S-300VM battalions has significantly strengthened the country’s ability to protect important installations from air attacks.”

The report said this marks the first major Russian military shipment to Venezuela in more than ten years. The latest delivery reportedly includes both medium-range Buk-M2 and short-range Pantsir systems, expanding Venezuela’s existing air defense network. The Venezuelan Air Force already operates several Buk-M2 units, which have been deployed during previous periods of heightened tension with the United States.

The shipments follow reports of Russian military transport flights to Venezuela in recent days. Western sources have suggested the flights were linked to the transfer of systems designed to counter possible U.S. air strikes.

According to Military Watch Magazine, the transfer comes as Caracas faces renewed threats of foreign intervention. Venezuelan officials have reportedly sought direct military support from Moscow and Beijing.

Venezuela previously purchased large quantities of Russian military hardware in the late 2000s and early 2010s but had not received major deliveries in recent years. The Buk-M2 system can track up to 28 targets simultaneously and engage them at ranges of up to 45 kilometers. It has been combat-tested in Syria, where it was used by the Syrian Air Force to intercept air strikes from Turkey and Israel.

Russia’s engagement in Venezuela is partly driven by strategic and economic interests. The country holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves and vast mineral resources.
