KNDS has presented the Leopard 2A8 in Munich on November 19, the first tank built from scratch for the German military (Bundeswehr) in more than 30 years.
Germany has ordered 123 Leopard 2A8s, set to enter service from 2027 to 2030, replacing the Leopard 2A6 and 2A7. Lithuania, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands are also acquiring 44, 44, and 46 units under a shared framework designed to deliver interoperable fleets and streamlined logistics.
KNDS said the 2A8 features an updated armor capsule, enhanced mine resistance, new passive and dynamic protection modules, and a modern active defense system. The tank also integrates an advanced sensor suite, new digital architecture, updated communication channels, and an improved fire-control system. Full field and service testing will be completed before production begins.
Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius urged the German army and industry to shorten procurement and delivery timelines, stressing the need for resilient supply chains and scalable production.
Wednesday’s event also included the presentation of the modernized Panzerhaubitze 2000 A4, which will replace systems transferred to Ukraine.
In a related development, Ukrainian Armor has begun producing shells for Abrams and Leopard 2 tanks.
