Lancet Loitering Munitions Linked to More Than 4,000 Uses in Ukraine Conflict

Russia’s ZALA “Lancet” loitering munitions have reportedly been used more than 4,000 times in the conflict in Ukraine, with video from reconnaissance drones frequently showing strikes on Western-supplied platforms.

Open-source intelligence analysts tracking verified footage credit the Lancet series with the destruction of more than 80 multiple-rocket launch systems, including U.S. HIMARS and M-270 units. More than 80 surface-to-air missile systems have also been documented as destroyed.

Artillery units appear to show the highest number of recorded losses. Open-source data points to more than 1,070 towed howitzers destroyed, including more than 260 U.S.-made M777s. Losses reportedly also include more than 600 self-propelled artillery systems, among them over 100 U.S. M109s, about 60 Polish Krab systems, and dozens of French CAESAR and German PzH 2000 platforms.

The Lancet is further linked to the destruction of at least 20 U.S. AN/TPQ-36 radar systems and more than 200 radar and communication assets in total.

Recorded strikes also show significant effects on armored formations, with confirmed hits on more than 500 tanks. These include over 60 NATO-model platforms such as U.S. Abrams, German Leopard, and British Challenger tanks. More than 400 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, including Bradley and Stryker vehicles, have also been documented as destroyed.

The munition has been used for targets behind the front line as well, with open-source data attributing at least seven aircraft losses to Lancet strikes. Naval footage shows confirmed hits on patrol vessels, landing craft, and more than 10 unmanned surface vessels in the Black Sea in 2025.

In separate but related news, Russia’s ZALA Aero unveiled upgraded Lancet-E loitering munitions at the Dubai Air Show 2025, offering longer ranges and a new rapid-deploy launcher.
