Russia has confirmed that India wants to buy more S-400 Triumf air-defense systems, with Moscow saying the request follows the system’s recent battlefield use and New Delhi’s assessment of its performance.
The announcement comes just days before Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India for the 23rd Russian-Indian summit on December 4–5.
Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) Director Dmitry Shugayev was quoted as saying by Russia’s state-owned TASS that Indian military specialists “are showing a keen interest” in additional S-400 units. He said the request stems from “systems which have proven very effective,” adding that the two sides are already “working together” on the possibility of expanding the current inventory.
Shugayev recalled that the Indian military had credited the S-400 for its role in Operation Sindoor, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly congratulated Indian personnel after the operation concluded.
He also referred to Western assessments, saying leading think tanks rated the S-400’s effectiveness at about 90 percent, compared with 50 percent attributed to the U.S.-made Patriot system.
