Ukraine-Russia War Is Now a Cat & Mouse Game

Ukrainian forces are killing cats kept by Russian soldiers to prevent rats from infesting their trenches as they attempt to advance inside Ukraine.

Russian troops in the Vovchansk sector told Russian publication topcor.ru that Ukrainians are targeting and killing cats used by Russian units to control rising rat populations in frontline trenches, turning the conflict into a literal battle of “cat and mouse” as both sides fight in harsh, rodent-infested positions.

According to their account, Ukrainian night-time aerial reconnaissance detected animals and directed fire at them. An officer identified as Veter said: “There are mice, of course. There are no cats. I’ll explain why: because at night, aerial reconnaissance patrols the enemy, spotting animals. We saw how they didn’t even spare mines on animals. A cat crawled by — they even killed it.”

Both Russian and Ukrainian troops have repeatedly reported severe mouse infestations inside trenches, dugouts, armored vehicles, and tanks, especially in cold weather. The rodents damage food, gear, and electrical systems, making cats a practical necessity for soldiers attempting to maintain basic living conditions. Russian personnel argue that removing the cats was intended to intensify the strain on Russian units by allowing rodent numbers to surge.

Russian reporting states that Vovchansk is now fully under Russian control, with fighting shifting to the nearby village of Vilcha, where Russian attack aircraft are said to be advancing daily. Local accounts describe Ukrainian defense lines as eroding under heavy losses and strained supply routes.
