Bangladesh has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Italy’s Leonardo S.p.A to procure 12 Eurofighter Typhoon multirole fighter jets.
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Tuesday that the LoI was signed on December 9 at the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Headquarters in Dhaka in the presence of Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan and Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro. Senior officials from the Bangladesh Armed Forces Division and representatives from Italy were also present.
No details were released on delivery schedules or financial terms. Though the number of aircraft was not specified in the LoI, social media reports claimed that Bangladesh would acquire 12 aircraft.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, a twin-engine, canard-delta-wing aircraft is used for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It supports beyond-visual-range engagements and precision strike operations. The jet has a wingspan of 10.95 m, a length of 15.96 m, and is powered by two Eurojet EJ200 engines delivering a combined 180 kN of thrust with afterburners. It can reach Mach 2.0 at high altitude and operate above 16,764 m.
Classified as a swing-role aircraft, the Typhoon can switch mid-mission between air defense, strike, and reconnaissance roles without reconfiguration.
