Chinese official media have disclosed new details about two upgraded versions of the J-20 stealth fighter—the J-20A and the twin-seat J-20S.

China Military Bugle, an official account under the PLA News Media Center, said the two aircraft types made their first public appearances during China’s V-Day military parade on September 3, 2025. One J-20S, two J-20As and two original J-20s flew in an arrow-shaped formation during the fly-past, though no specifications were released at the time.

The J-20 and J-20A have been described by state-controlled CCTV News as heavy stealth, single-seat multirole fighters, with the J-20A positioned as an upgraded variant for future air combat missions. Military affairs expert Zhang Xuefeng said the most visible change is a raised section where the rear of the canopy meets the fuselage.

“The original J-20 used a taller canopy to provide all-directional visibility, while the J-20A’s canopy integrates more smoothly with the fuselage, reducing airflow separation and drag,” Zhang said, noting that the design supports supersonic flight and cruise.

Zhang added that the raised rear canopy creates space for new systems and, potentially, additional fuel, which could enhance overall performance. Fu Qianshao, another military expert, told the Global Times that the redesign suggests the pilot may no longer rely primarily on direct visual observation.

“It is likely that the J-20A is fitted with upgraded avionics and sensors that deliver situational awareness directly to the pilot,” Fu said.

Fu also said the added structure and systems could increase weight, which may require more powerful engines, and stressed that the “A” designation indicates broad internal and external upgrades rather than cosmetic changes.

CCTV News also detailed the J-20S, describing it as the world’s first twin-seat stealth fighter. The aircraft is designed for medium- and long-range air superiority, precision strikes against ground and maritime targets, electronic jamming, and tactical command and control, including manned-unmanned teaming operations.

With a second pilot, the J-20S can conduct forward tactical command missions. Zhang compared its role to a playmaker, saying the aircraft can either carry out tasks independently or direct other platforms. He added that the rear-seat pilot enables more precise drone control and coordination, increasing the effectiveness of the wider combat system.
