Chinese Combat Container Ship Revealed

China has developed a new container ship fitted with a full suite of missiles, air defense systems, and close-in weapons, underscoring the growing militarization of ostensibly civilian maritime platforms.

As per videos shared on social media, the vessel can be seen sailing near a port with visible launchers and gun systems installed on its deck and superstructure. The ship is reportedly armed with YJ-18A anti-ship or multipurpose tactical cruise missiles, assessed to have a range of about 540 kilometers. The missile reportedly cruises at roughly 950 km/h and reaches terminal speeds of up to 3,200 km/h, comparable in design to Russia’s 3M54 series.

The vessel also appears to be equipped with the HHQ-9 long-range air defense missile system, with an estimated engagement range of 200 to 250 kilometers. An aft-mounted rotating radar antenna is visible and is assessed to support detection, tracking, target designation, and missile guidance. The radar configuration is believed to draw on systems used aboard Chinese naval surface combatants, with reported detection ranges exceeding 300 kilometers against larger targets.

For close-in defense, the ship carries two 30 mm anti-aircraft artillery systems: a seven-barrel Type 730 and an eleven-barrel Type 1130. Both systems are designed to intercept incoming anti-ship missiles and aerial threats at short range, including high-speed targets.

The only visible limitation is incomplete coverage of the vessel’s rear hemisphere, though additional close-in weapon systems could be installed without major structural changes.
