Qatar Orders Medium- and Long-Range Air Surveillance Radars from Thales

Qatar has ordered medium- and long-range air surveillance radars from Thales to strengthen its national airspace protection, under a contract signed at the DIMDEX trade fair in Doha.

The agreement, signed by the Qatari Air Force, covers the supply of GM200 MM/A and GM400 Alpha ground-based radars, along with a national supervision and maintenance system and a permanent training program for operators and technicians.

The radars are intended to support air surveillance missions, including the detection and tracking of aircraft, drones and other aerial objects across different ranges and environments. The deal also includes long-term local support, with Thales teams responsible for maintenance and training activities through 2036.

The GM200 MM/A is designed for multi-mission use and can detect smaller aerial targets at ranges of up to 350 kilometers, while the GM400 Alpha is designed to track low-altitude and slow-moving objects as well as highly maneuverable threats.

Both radars will be integrated using Thales’ Secure Digital Integration Platform, which is intended to combine data from multiple sensors into a single air picture and allow future integration of non-U.S. sensors into national command and control systems.
