Airmen at Robins Air Force Base are working to combat the growing threat of laser strikes

According to  United States Air Force, The Federal Aviation Administration reports incidents have jumped nearly 48% since 2020, with more than 10,000 cases in 2025 alone. Laser attacks can cause eye injuries and disrupt flights.

To counter the threat, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Human Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is upgrading Aircrew Laser Eye Protection gear through its Technology Insertion program, refreshed every five to seven years.

The new Block 3 family, developed with Robins AFB teams, includes six modular devices day and night spectacles, ballistic eyewear, and visors compatible with night vision goggles. Block 3 uses a new dye that blocks a broader range of harmful laser wavelengths while allowing more natural light for clearer vision.

The Air Force plans to deliver more than 45,000 devices by 2029, safeguarding airmen and aircraft as laser incidents continue to rise.
