Did China Copy Shield AI's VTOL Drone?

China’s AVIC Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group has introduced a new vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle known as Yunying.

Its design has drawn comparisons to the V-BATsystem developed by Shield AI — a U.S. VTOL reconnaissance UAV also using a ducted-fan, tail-sitter style layout.

The tail-sitter platform, featuring a ducted fan configuration, requires just a 3×3 meter area for takeoff and landing and transitions from vertical lift to forward flight for improved cruise efficiency, according to the company.

Yunying is offered in electric (25 kg MTOW) and fuel-powered (31 kg MTOW) versions, both capable of operating at altitudes up to 4,000 meters.

The electric model reaches 190 km/h with a 3 kg payload, while the gasoline-powered variant achieves 210 km/h and carries up to 4 kg. The UAV has a 2.6-meter wingspan and an overall length of 1.96 meters.

Equipped with an electro-optical sensor suite for real-time video transmission, Yunying is positioned for urban surveillance, industrial inspection, and emergency response missions.
