Strikes allegedly carried out by the U.S. and Israel hit a school in the city of Khomein in Iran’s western Markazi province, damaging the building and nearby residential structures, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.

“The Dr. Hafezi School in Khomein was hit as a result of the hostile actions of the Zionist regime,” the agency said, adding that residential buildings around the school were also damaged.

The report said additional strikes targeted a training camp, a shopping mall, and an administrative building in the city.

The attacks are part of a wider campaign launched on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel began striking targets across Iran, including Tehran, causing infrastructure damage and civilian casualties.

During the strikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed, after which Iranian authorities declared a 40-day mourning period. Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes against Israeli territory and U.S. military targets across the Middle East.

U.S. Tomahawk Missile Likely Used In Strike on Iran School in Minab, Bellingcat Researcher Says

A separate strike on February 28 hit Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' elementary school in Minab, killing more than 160 people, mostly children.

A conflict researcher with the Dutch investigative group Bellingcat said footage released by Iran’s semi-official Mehr News agency indicated the building was struck by a U.S. Tomahawk cruise missile.

The video, recorded on the day of the incident and released Sunday, shows a missile striking a building and sending a large plume of dark smoke into the air.

In a thread posted on X, researcher Trevor Ball shared what he described as previously unseen footage from Mehr News showing a missile hitting a building within a compound linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He wrote the footage showed “for the first time that the United States (had) struck the area.”

Ball said “the U.S. is the only participant in the war that is known to have Tomahawk missiles. Israel is not known to have Tomahawk missiles.”

He added that the video had been geolocated and shared satellite imagery of the compound with graphics showing the missile’s impact area. According to his analysis, imagery indicated that two structures within the impact zone were damaged, including a clinic, while another appeared to be an earth-covered bunker.

Ball also rejected claims that an Iranian missile caused the strike, saying: “These missiles have a bottom mounted engine, as opposed to the Tomahawk whose engine is internal to the main missile body, with a small air intake.”

The identification provides the first clear indication of the type of munition used in the strike.

U.S. Central Command has previously acknowledged using Tomahawk missiles during the conflict. It also released an image showing the USS Spruance, operating as part of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, launching a Tomahawk missile on February 28 while within range of the area where the school was hit.

Bellingcat said the newly surfaced footage appears to challenge claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran was responsible for the explosion.

The U.S. military has begun an internal assessment of the incident. Under Pentagon guidelines on civilian harm mitigation, such reviews are initiated when investigators believe U.S. forces may have been involved.
