A mock-up of a wide-body long-range airliner, the Tupolov Tu-454, was unveiled at the Russian Venture Forum held in the Russian city of Kazan today.
The Tu-454's takeoff weight will be 200-220 tons, and two advanced PD-26 engines, developed as an intermediate link between the PD-14 and PD-35, will provide a thrust of 52 tons. The twin-aisle aircraft will be able to carry 250-350 passengers up to 15,000 kilometers.
The aircraft will be built from the ground-upwards with Russian components, officials of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) said at the unveiling of the mock-up. This is unlike the MS-21 narrow-body airliner whose components had to be import-substituted.
In 2025, Vadim Badekha, head of the UAC, stated that a project to develop a twin-engine Il with a PD-35 was being considered.
The Tu-454 is said to be a “twin” of the earlier Chinese-CR919, a joint venture between Russia and China to develop a wide-body aircraft to compete with those of Airbus and Boeing. However the project fell apart under threat of sanctions and China decided to go it alone by rebranding CR929 to C929.
The Tu-454 could meet the needs of domestic airlines not only on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes, such as to South America without a stopover in Europe, and on some domestic routes such as Moscow-Vladivostok.
