Sweden today announced the selection of Naval Group's Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (FDI) for the Swedish Navy's Lulea frigate acquisition program.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defense Minister Pál Jonsson announced the selection during a press conference aboard the Visby-class corvette Harnosand, moored in Skeppsbron.

Naval Group will supply the Swedish Navy with four FDI frigates following a competitive selection by the  Swedish Ministry of Defence.

Naval Group has edged out  Babcock/Saab ARROWHEAD 120 and Navantia A-4000 frigates which were competing for the Swedish order.

The four ships are to be built in Lorient on a line already used by the French Navy and the Hellenic Navy. The first delivery is expected in 2030, followed by one unit per year until 2033.

The contract is expected to be signed in the second half of 2026. The total cost of the program has not been disclosed, but government estimates published in recent months place it in the range of 40 to 60 billion Swedish kronor (€3.6-5.4 billion), including armament and long-term logistical support.

The acquisition marks the Swedish Navy's return to the frigate category after more than 40 years since the last HALLAND-class ships were decommissioned in the early 1980s.

We are extremely honoured to have been selected by the Swedish Ministry of Defence. We are now eager to engage with the Swedish authorities and partners in the execution of this strategic project," said Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group.
