UAE Fortifies Dubai Airshow Site With Russian Pantsir Systems

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has secured the ongoing Dubai Airshow using Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft systems it bought for $800 million a couple of years ago.

“Yes, we are using the Pantsir systems to provide security at the Dubai Airshow 2019. The Pantsir is quite good in terms of range,” Assistant to the UAE Deputy Defense Minister Major-General Abdullah Al Hashemi was quoted as saying by TASS on Wednesday.

Fifty Pantsir missile systems, along with 1,000 missiles were delivered to the UAE between 2009 and 2013. Presently, Moscow is in talks with Abu Dhabi over upgrade of these systems.

“We are discussing the upgrade of Pantsir-S1s with the UAE,” said Dmitry Shugayev, Head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, on Sunday.

Launched in 1986, Dubai Airshow is a biennial event held in Dubai, UAE. The 2017’s edition of the event saw 1,200 exhibitors from 63 countries, over 79,380 trade visitors, 159 aircraft on display, 1,603 international and regional media and an order book of $113.8 billion.

This year, the show was held from 17-21 November. According to reports, at the end of Day 4, $48.8 billion worth of deals were signed at the venue.
