A Boeing 737 operated by Chinese Eastern airlines crashed in the rural countryside near Wuzhou city.
The airplane was flying a domestic route from the city of Kunming to Guangzhou when it crashed on a hill in Guangxi province.
The twin-engine, single-aisle Boeing 737 finds its name among the world’s most popular planes for short and medium-haul flights. China Eastern operates multiple versions of the aircraft, including the 737-800 and the 737 MAX. It is not immediately clear which variant of 737 was involved in the accident, while few reports suggest it could be a six years old Boeing 737-800.
Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, which is ablaze, but casualties are unclear.
China's last fatal jet accident was in 2010, when 44 of 96 people were killed when an Embraer E-190 regional jet flown by Henan Airlines crashed on approach to Yichun airport in low visibility.
