A Ukrainian AN / MPQ-64 counter-battery radar station supplied by the U.S. was reportedly destroyed by the Russian forces.
“In the area of the settlement of Chasov Yar of the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Russian Aerospace Forces destroyed the U.S.-made AN / MPQ-64 counter-battery radar supplied to the Kyiv regime,” Igor Konashenkov, Russian MoD spokesman, said at a regular press briefing today.
He added that Russia also destroyed a fuel depot for the Armed Forces of Ukraine equipment near the village of Kurakhovo in the DPR, six ammunition depots in the areas of Veliky Artakovo (Mykolaiv region), Zaliman (Kharkiv region), Kramatorsk, Zaitsevo, Krasnogorovka and Avdeevka (DPR).
The AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar system alerts front-line air-defense weapons whenever it sees hostile planes, helicopters, drones, or missiles. It’s a three-dimensional (3D) radar, meaning it reports the range, bearing, and elevation of the objects it is tracking. It uses an X-Band 360-degree phased array air-defense radar with a 46-mile range.
Norwegian anti-aircraft missile system NASAMS works with U.S.-built MPQ-64 Sentinel air defense X band 3D radar, but NASAMS II in addition to having Link 16 has a significant update of the radar system. Experts say this version is better than its predecessor.
The ministry also said it had shot down two HIMARS missiles.
