Northrop Grumman has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Finance to collaborate on the production of medium-caliber ammunition for Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) in Lithuania, as well as for Ukraine.
"This project will be another important step forward in the development of Lithuania's defense industry. We hope that cooperation with our American allies will strengthen the country's security and preparedness, while also benefiting the wider region, including Ukraine,” said Gintarė Skaistė, Lithuania’s finance minister.
The agreement aims to bolster Lithuania's industrial capabilities by sharing technology and manufacturing expertise, in line with U.S. policy. The partnership supports the goal of strengthening the defense industries of allied nations, ensuring stockpile replenishment, and enhancing munitions supply chains.
Skaistė added that the initiative is expected to involve Giraitės Ginkluotės Gamykla (Giraitė Armaments Plant), a state-owned company, aligning with Lithuania’s strategic objective to reinforce its defense industry.
Northrop Grumman has developed ammunition, including 30 mm tactical and training rounds used in anti-armor, ground suppression, air defense, and shipboard-defense applications.
Lithuania has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine's defense against Russia. The country has donated a range of key equipment and supplies, including M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, M577 Tracked Armored Personnel Carriers, G36 Rifles, and various types of Ammunition, such as 5.56mm and 7.62mm. Additionally, Lithuania has provided Grenade Launchers, Javelin Anti-tank Missiles, Stinger Air Defense Systems, and L16 81mm Mortar Systems to Ukrainian forces. Other essential donations include Volcano Mine-Clearing Systems, Radio Communication Equipment, and Medical Equipment and Supplies.
