Fiji has received its third Guardian-class Patrol Boat in a ceremony held in Henderson, Western Australia, as part of Australia’s Pacific Maritime Security Program.

The vessel aims to enhance Fiji's maritime security, assisting in combating transnational crime and maritime threats while supporting a peaceful and resilient Pacific region.

The delivery underscores the strengthening ties between Fiji and Australia under the Vuvale Partnership, built on mutual trust and respect. This marks the 22nd patrol boat delivered by Australia to Pacific nations through the program, which reflects a 30-year commitment to fostering regional stability and economic security.

The Guardian-class patrol boats, built to replace the Pacific Forum-class vessels supplied from 1987 to 1997, are designed for a range of maritime missions, including protecting economic zones, tackling illegal fishing, and conducting search and rescue operations. These 39.5-meter vessels have a 3,000-nautical-mile range, can reach speeds of up to 20 knots, and are equipped with features like a stern ramp for pursuit boats and advanced electronics. They can accommodate a crew of 23 and can be optionally armed with a 30 mm autocannon and heavy machine guns.

Despite their capabilities, design flaws have been reported, including issues with engine coupling, air quality in the infirmary, and the exhaust system. Manufacturer Austal has pledged to address these defects to ensure the vessels remain reliable assets for Pacific nations.
