The Ministry of Defense and the IDF have signed a 2.8 billion NIS ($785 million) agreement with Israel Shipyards to manufacture five advanced 'Reshef' warships for the Israeli Navy.
This marks the first return to domestic warship production in over 20 years.
The 'Reshef' ships, developed in close collaboration with the Navy, integrate Israeli defense technology, offering enhanced operational capabilities and maritime superiority. Designed as multi-role vessels, they will replace the aging "Nirit" ships, which have been in service for over four decades.
According to a report from the Israeli Ministry of Defense on Facebook, the manufacturing process will take six years, with an option for additional ships in the future.
This deal will ensure the self-reliance of Israel's naval forces, guarantee continuity in ship production, and create hundreds of jobs in northern Israel. The decision to build these ships locally further strengthens Israel’s defense industry and manufacturing independence.
Defense Ministry CEO Colonel (Res.) Eyal Zamir emphasized the deal's broader impact, saying, "The Reshef deal embodies the perfect combination of security, economy, and industry. These new ships will play a vital role in strengthening the Navy’s capabilities. Manufacturing them here in Israel not only preserves and expands the country’s strategic production line for combat ships but also secures jobs and supports our continued operational independence. I am confident that other nations will follow the Israeli Navy's lead and seek to equip their forces with Israeli-built warships, boosting Israel’s defense exports."
