European Defence Agency Launches Ammunition Standardization Initiative

The European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched the Small Arms Ammunition Technologies (SAAT) project, a four-year initiative designed to create a unified standard for small arms ammunition.

The project, led by Belgian defence company FN Herstal, is supported by a broad European consortium comprising 18 partners from nine countries. These include both EU member states and non-EU nations such as Norway and Switzerland.

The SAAT project seeks to foster closer cooperation among European armed forces and to advance ammunition technology. The initiative aims to establish performance criteria that address both current and future security threats. By focusing on the development and analysis of small arms ammunition components, such as projectiles, propellants, and cartridge cases, the project aims to ensure that European nations are better equipped to face emerging challenges.

With a budget of €8.3 million, the project is set to involve key European defence manufacturers and research organisations. Partners include companies like Beretta, CZUB, Eurenco, Fiocchi Munizioni, Mesko, Nammo, Nobel Sport, and Swiss P Defence. Research institutions also play a crucial role in the project, including Armasuisse from Switzerland, DGA Techniques Terrestres from France, FFI from Norway, FOI from Sweden, the Royal Military Academy of Belgium, TNO from the Netherlands, and the Military University of Technology in Poland.

One of the key goals of the SAAT initiative is to strengthen the interoperability of European armed forces by creating a shared ammunition standard. This will reduce reliance on external suppliers and ensure that EU member states are better prepared to respond to evolving security threats. Additionally, the project aims to develop prototype projectiles and enhance the design and functionality of critical ammunition technologies.

The SAAT project’s kick-off meeting in mid-December marked the beginning of a collaborative effort that brings together defence industry leaders, national Ministries of Defence, and academic institutions. This cooperative framework is intended to set the groundwork for the project’s governance and to guide the development of common standards for small arms ammunition.
