Israel’s Ministry of Defense, Navy, and Israel Shipyards have started production of Reshef-class warships with a steel-cutting ceremony, launching a program to build five vessels for NIS 2.8 billion (around $800 million).
The Reshef-class corvettes will replace the Sa’ar 4.5-class ships, which have been in service for nearly 40 years. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in three and a half years. The ships, weighing approximately 1,000 tons, will be lighter than the Sa’ar 6-class vessels and are designed for improved speed and maneuverability.
The new warships are expected to play a key role in securing Israel’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and protecting offshore oil and gas platforms. Compared to the Sa’ar 4.5, which has a displacement of 500 tons and reaches speeds of 34 knots, the Reshef-class vessels will reportedly be larger at 76 meters in length and 1,000 tons in displacement, offering enhanced operational capabilities.
The Reshef-class will feature upgraded weaponry, including a 76/62 main gun, Rafael’s C-Dome missile system, sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, and Typhoon 30mm remote weapon stations. It may also integrate high-energy laser systems for defense. The vessels will be equipped with new radar and sensor systems, including the IAI Elta ELM-2258 AESA radar, enhancing detection and tracking capabilities.
