The Pakistan Army Aviation Command has reportedly begun inducting Chinese-made Z-10ME attack helicopters, replacing the decades-old fleet of U.S.-supplied AH-1F Cobras.
Images and video footage shared on social media show the new helicopters bearing Pakistan Army markings are now in service.
The Z-10ME, an export variant of China’s Z-10 developed by Changhe Aircraft Industry Corporation under AVIC, has been designed to operate in high-threat, high-altitude environments. The model reportedly features upgraded armor, enhanced electronic warfare systems, and improved engines for operations in challenging conditions.
The newly observed helicopters in Pakistan appear without the millimeter-wave radar dome seen on other versions, indicating a tailored configuration. Despite this omission, open-source analysis suggests the aircraft still retain advanced electro-optical targeting and integrated countermeasure systems.
Pakistan has relied on AH-1F Cobra attack helicopters since the 1980s. A 2015 deal to procure U.S.-made AH-1Z Vipers was suspended due to diplomatic tensions between Washington and Islamabad. A separate order for 30 Turkish T129 ATAK helicopters was also blocked, as the required U.S. export license for its engines was not granted.
This paved the way for China to step in with the Z-10ME offer. The exact number of helicopters received remains undisclosed by the Pakistan Army.
